How to stand out on the Internet
Geri is launching a Web site for her business. How can her site stand out amongst a sea of e-commerce? Share your ideas here.
What you are asking for falls more in line with the concept of branding and brand awareness.
There is nothing wrong with wanting to set the mood with your potential prospects, but one thing is certain, design is paramount in this equation.
The last thing you want is to publish a run of the mill template or have a dated look. Crisp design emphasizing usability (*think amazon.com) is the determining factor if the traffic you get stays.
I would also bring attention to the fact that you intend to donate proceeds, tie into as many Green companies as well as leverage the distinctions that differentiate you from your competition.
Aside from that, focus on quality content (themed for the greatest affect) as well as kick off a link building campaign to build enough link weight to your pages (so they can rank on their own).
Alot of the advice given is great.I would like to add the social networking and user groups can be a fantastic way to market.Sit down and try to determine demographically who your main audience will be.From there you can begin to search groups that are filled with like minded people. You will find that many even support promotions within the group at regular intervals.I would also try posing the question about 12pm sales within the groups to see what the reation would be.
Your website must be attractively designed, easy to navigate and must offer some kind of secure encrypted transaction system. Also you need to promote the business more aggressively in order to increase its targeted traffic. Optimization is a must too. Be original in what you offer to your visitors and you should generate interest and happy returning clients.
In the long run, the same thing goes for an Internet based business hat goes for a brick and mortar business. The customer must always come first! Repeat and referral customers are the key to any successful business, and too many companies these days overlook this fact and focus only on the bottom line. Giving a customer a refund or credit when they are unsatisfied, or sometimes simply saying “I am sorry” goes a lot further than treating customers like an eternal fount that is ever flowing and each customer is only as important as their last purchase. We made a vow when we started our business that we would only carry products that we believed in so we would only have to answer for an individual customers taste and not the quality of the item, and that each customer was a person who deserved more from us than we could ever expect from them. Customer service has become something companies pontificate about, but never seem to get around to, this will ultimately be their undoing.

Bringing up a new site to market on the internet is easier then in the traditional business. As described in the article, driving traffic is key. Its all a simple mathematical game. The more traffic, the more percentage of possible sales.
My suggestion is to concentrate on SEO. Other then the traditional methods of SEO, which includes optimizing pages (especially TITLE tags, and headers, strong fonts, etc…), I would also suggest:
- Sticking with key themes. Do not over do it. Stick with one theme, throughout the site.
- Find specific keywords and concentrate on them for that one page. It is ok to have many keywords, but try to keep 2-3 keywords per page. Keep in mind that search engines index one-page and site entirely.
On the site design perspective, it is key to use the KISS concept (keep it simple and stupid). Although, you want users go to your site, it is better to have less users, but quality users than users who are disappointed with what your site has.
